How to Take Better Photos of Your Dog | Brixham Pet Photographer
Dogs rarely sit still for the perfect photograph — and that's exactly what makes photographing them so much fun!
The best pet photographs often capture personality rather than a perfect pose. Whether your dog is running around, staring curiously at the camera or simply enjoying a quiet moment, these tips can help you capture photographs that feel natural and full of character.
1. Get Down to Their Level
Try getting down closer to your dog's eye level rather than photographing them from above.
This can make the photograph feel much more personal and puts the viewer right into your dog's world.
2. Use Natural Light
Whenever possible, make use of natural light.
A bright but overcast day can give you wonderfully soft light, while early morning or later afternoon can create warmer, more atmospheric photographs.
Try to avoid harsh midday sunlight, which can create strong shadows and make your dog squint.
3. Get Their Attention
You don't always need your dog looking directly at the camera.
Have someone just behind you use their name, a favourite toy or a treat to get their attention. You might capture a curious expression or those brilliant ears suddenly standing up!
4. Let Them Move
Don't be afraid of movement.
Let your dog run, jump, explore or walk towards you. If your camera allows it, using a faster shutter speed can help freeze the action.
Some of the most memorable photographs happen when a dog is simply being a dog.
5. Capture Their Personality
Think about what makes your dog unique.
Are they energetic? Curious? Sleepy? A little bit mischievous?
Try to photograph those characteristics rather than forcing them into a pose that doesn't suit them.
6. Keep Your Camera Ready
Dogs can change expression in a fraction of a second.
Keep your camera ready and watch what they're doing. Sometimes the photograph you weren't expecting becomes your favourite.
7. Try Different Angles
Don't take every photograph from the same position.
Move around your dog and experiment with different angles. Photograph them from their level, slightly above them or from further away to include their surroundings.
Even a small change in position can completely change the photograph.
8. Be Patient
Perhaps the most important tip of all — don't rush it.
Give your dog time to settle and explore. If they're distracted or excited, take a break and try again.
The more relaxed they are, the more naturally their personality will come through.
